Breast-lifts usually involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola, another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast, and the third is horizontal — following the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast.

After your surgeon removes excess breast skin, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher, more flattering position. Skin located above the areola is brought down and together beneath the areola to reshape and lift the breast.

The areola, which may have stretched over time, can be reduced in size during your breast lift. Since the nipples and areolas remain attached to the underlying tissue, a breast lift may affect your ability to breast feed and may reduce normal sensation.

There are many factors that determine which breast lift technique your surgeon will choose. These include the size and shape of your breasts, the size of your areolas and the extent of drooping. In some cases, it’s possible to avoid the horizontal incision beneath the breast as well as the vertical incision that runs from the areola to the breast crease.
