Breast Lift (Mastopexy) at Plastic + Hand
Even perfect breasts are incapable of defying time and gravity forever. Pregnancy, nursing, weight loss, and aging all take their toll on the contour and firmness of your breasts.
If you’re satisfied with the size of your breasts, a breast lift could be all you need to improve their shape and restore your youthful figure. If your breasts have lost volume in addition to their shape, you may want to consider breast implants as well. Breast augmentation, in conjunction with a breast lift, is an option your surgeon can review with you.
Breast lifts at Plastic + Hand are performed using general anesthesia in the comfort of our state-of-the-art Plastic + Hand Surgery Center.
Trained at some of the country’s top medical centers, Plastic + Hand surgeons have the depth of experience and skills necessary to perform your breast lift surgery safely and successfully…all right here in Maine.
What does a breast lift involve?
A breast lift (or mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts. At Plastic + Hand, we recommend breast-lift surgery to correct:
- pendulous breasts that are of a satisfactory size
- breasts that have lost their firmness
- nipples andareolas that are too low and point downward
- uneven breasts
Breast-lifts usually involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola, another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast, and the third is horizontal — following the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast.
After your surgeon removes excess breast skin, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher, more flattering position. Skin located above the areola is brought down and together beneath the areola to reshape and lift the breast.
The areola, which may have stretched over time, can be reduced in size during your breast lift. Since the nipples and areolas remain attached to the underlying tissue, a breast lift may affect your ability to breast feed and may reduce normal sensation.

There are many factors that determine which breast lift technique your surgeon will choose. These include the size and shape of your breasts, the size of your areolas and the extent of drooping. In some cases, it’s possible to avoid the horizontal incision beneath the breast as well as the vertical incision that runs from the areola to the breast crease. This is something we can determine in your initial consultation.
If your breasts have lost volume in addition to their shape, you may want to consider breast augmentation as well. You and your surgeon can discuss the possibility during your consultation. To learn more, visit our breast augmentation page.

What should I expect after a breast lift?
You should be able to return home the same day as your breast lift. Full recovery takes about two weeks at which time you can resume normal activities.
While no breast lift can fight gravity indefinitely, you can expect to enjoy beautiful results for many years to come. Your breasts will be firmer and rounder giving you a more youthful figure. Women with small breasts usually have longer-lasting results.
Who are the best candidates for a breast lift?
The best candidates for a breast lift are healthy women who are satisfied with the size of their breasts, but not with their shape or firmness. As with all cosmetic surgery, it is important to have realistic expectations and a thorough understanding of this procedure. An in-depth consultation at Plastic + Hand will determine if a breast lift is right for you.
With a Plastic + Hand surgeon, you’ll get the results you want with the respect you deserve…all right here in Maine.
