What is reconstructive plastic surgery?

The word “plastic” is derived from the Greek word “plastikos,” which means to mold, form, or reconstruct. Reconstructive surgery treats parts of the body that are affected by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease

In performing reconstructive surgery, Plastic + Hand surgeons often work closely with physicians of other specialties.

Do you perform trauma reconstruction?

Yes, we do. Our community deserves our best, so all Plastic + Hand surgeons take call to support the trauma teams at area hospitals. We work with patients’ doctors and other surgeons to ensure optimal care and results. Our surgeons are an integral part of Maine Medical Center’s trauma team for the multiply injured patient and provide full-time coverage to the Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital Emergency Departments. They are also on staff at New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland.

Do you perform microscopic surgery?

Yes, we do. The Plastic + Hand surgeons are fully trained in microscopic surgery, which allows the transplantation of tissues in difficult reconstruction problems. Microscopic surgery can also be necessary for the optimal treatment of injured nerves and blood vessels. We’re problem solvers and ready and capable to surgically repair what is needed.
