David Fitz, MD, volunteers in Haiti with Operation Smile

“I went for 2 weeks with Operation Smile International and worked in Fond Parisien, about 25 miles outside of Port-au-Prince. Op Smile has been going to Haiti for many years, and went to Fond Parisien 3 days after the earthquake looking for a site to set up a disaster response team. They arrived at an orphanage with a walled facility perfect for organizing something the same time people from the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative arrived and we decided on a joint effort. We were at the Love a Child Orphanage and Health Center, now called Love a Child Disaster Recovery Center. Basically a tent hospital with operating rooms set up. I was there with, initially, one orthopedic surgeon and was acting chief of surgery when there. We performed wound drainage, skin grafts, amputations, orthopedic procedures, and some acute trauma(facial trauma) not related to the earthquake. When I left I passed the baton to a cardiac surgeon, plastic surgeon, and orthopedic surgeon. I am now on a clinical advisory council for the Op Smile Haiti Effort in trying to improve the operating facility and continue with the ongoing effort.  Op Smile has a blog on their website about our work.”

Plastic & Hand staff members support cancer research

Several employees of Plastic and Hand Surgical Associates participated in Mary’s Walk which took place on Sunday, March 15th.  Mary’s Walk was established in 1988 to celebrate the life of Mary Kerrimen Libby who past away in 1997 from Burkitt’s lymphoma, which is a rare form of cancer.  Mary’s Walk has contributed over $1,000,000 dollars to Maine-based research since it began.  An impressive ninety percent of every dollar donated goes to cancer research.  The staff at Plastic and Hand felt this was a wonderful opportunity to show their support and walk for a meaningful cause.
